Power firms set to roll out new metering plans

Electricity distribution firms say they are working on a new arrangement that will accelerate the rollout of new prepaid meters for different categories of consumers .

Based on the proposals submitted by the core investors in the Discos during the privatisation of the power firms in November 2013 , about 6. 52 million new meters are expected to be installed over the course of five years.

But almost four years after the privatisation , many of the Discos have been unable to meet their metering obligations under the Performance Agreements with the Bureau of Public Enterprise.

The Chief Executive Officer , Eko Electricity Distribution Company , Mr. Oladele Amoda , said they were working on the modality of what he called revised Credited Advance Payment for Metering Initiative with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

He said, “ There are options that will make provision of meters to the customers very fast ; so each Disco will look at the option that is best suited for their environment so that the customers, operators and government will be happy .

“ We will come up with something; probably very soon NERC will come up with an order that will enable us to do that; it is going to make things easy for both the operators and the customers. ”

The Chief Executive Officer , Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, an umbrella body for the Discos , Mr . Azu Obiaya, said NERC had started stakeholders /public consultations , with metering being one of the things being discussed .

“ So , it is our expectation that after the nationwide consultations are concluded , the regulator will roll out formal guidelines for whether or not it is a revised CAPMI or any other option to be pursued or implemented , ” he said .
