Hoodlums ‘invade’ dump as police destroy N50m narcotics in Lagos

A mild drama ensued on Tuesday as some hoodlums , aka area boys, stormed the Olusosun Dumpsite , Ojota , Lagos , where security agents, led by the state Acting Commissioner of Police, Edgar Imohimi , destroyed several bags of drugs.
The miscreants swooped on the drugs when the fire subsided and had wanted to get as many quantities as they could, but they were prevented from doing so by police operatives .
The gun-wielding operatives quickly repelled them and re-fuelled the fire .

A mammoth crowd had besieged the dump to witness Imohimi destroy the drugs .
PUNCH Metro gathered that the drugs, which comprised cannabis , skunk , arizona and codeine, had an estimated street value of N50 m .

Men of the Nigerian Army, Lagos State Task Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Lagos State Fire Service and the Lagos State Transport Management Authority participated in the exercise .

PUNCH Metro had reported that the narcotics were recovered during police raids on the Oshodi , Akala , and Itire areas of the state .
Addressing journalists, the Lagos CP, Imohimi , decried rising cases of hard drugs usage among youths , adding that there was a nexus between drug use and crime .

He said the command would continue to clamp down on drug dealers across the state to reduce violent crime to the minimum .

Edgar said, “ You will recall that during my town hall meetings , I assured Lagosians that we would rid our neighbourhoods of drug dealers . As such, I have instructed my officers and men to carry out series of operations to recover hard drugs anywhere they are being sold, arrest the sellers , and prosecute them.
burnt drugs

“ In line with a court order, we openly burnt drugs seized, which have an estimated street value of over N50 m . Some of these drugs include skunk , arizona Indian hemp and codeine .

“ What is worrisome about codeine is the fact that our youths can get it across counter in most pharmacies. ”

He urged pharmacists to be professional and dispense drugs like codeine based on doctors ’ prescription and called on parents to join hands with law enforcement agencies to fight drug menace .

“ Drugs fuel crimes and defiant behaviour. In most of our neighbourhoods , we have problems of youth restiveness and cultism. At Akala alone, we arrested over 50 suspects . They have all been charged to court , ” he added.

He stated that the raids on drugs dealers would continue until the youth had no access to hard drugs .

“ We must all join hands to take our neighbourhood back. We will not allow drugs to be sold on our streets anymore, ” he added.
