From WAEC, new examination diet for private candidates

The Nigerian National Office of the West African Examinations Council has introduced a new diet of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in fulfilment of its pledge to provide an opportunity to private candidates desiring to sit the examination for the second time.

Speaking at an event organised in Lagos to unveil the new diet , the Head of WAEC’ s Nigeria National Office, Mr . Isaac Adenipekun , said that registration of candidates for the examination started on October 9 and it would end on December 29 .

Adenipekun said that secondary school pupils who wished to resit the examination often had the opportunity to do so with the private candidates.

He said , “ With the growing concern among stakeholders over what they perceive as discrimination or denial of equal opportunity against private candidates, there has been a deluge of agitation , criticism and appeal across the West African sub -region for council to find a way of reducing the agony of long waiting experienced by the private candidates who desire another shot at WASSCE .

“ This situation is often cited as being responsible for the level of desperation oftentimes displayed by the perpetrators of examination malpractice at the private candidates examination centres . The council has also observed with chagrin the penchant by external candidates to register for the WASSCE for school candidates which has led to an astronomical increase in examination cheats being caught during the conduct of the examination . ’’

The HNO recalled that on April 13 , 2017, the Registrar to council, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, briefed newsmen at the WAEC International Office , Lagos that the council had given its approval for the conduct of an additional diet of the WASSCE for private candidates, beginning from 2018.

He said the Governing Board of WAEC, after thorough deliberations on the issue, approved that national offices should commence the conduct of one additional diet of the WASSCE every year for private candidates.

Adenipekun also noted that preparations for the conduct of the 2018 WASSCE for private candidates had commenced and efforts were being made to ensure its success .

He said that WAEC had decided to start the new diet in Nigeria, while other member countries of the council prepare to follow suit .

“ This first series of the WASSCE for private candidates, 2018 will be an urban-based examination and candidates will be examined in 19 subjects . Intending candidates for the examination are advised to visit the council’ s corporate website —www. waecnigeria . org — to confirm available examination towns and subjects before obtaining the registration PIN’’ , Adenipekun said .

The WAEC boss gave the assurance that the council would continue to be driven by its mandate to assist in the development of sound education by ensuring that education standards are maintained and the people of West Africa are given a vision of the great potential which lie beyond examination .
